Olmeca
Presbytery
All about our sister Presbytery in Mexico
Our
church is fortunate to benefit from the sister presbytery relationship that
exists between our own Homestead Presbytery and the Presbytery of Olmeca, which
is a part of the National Presbyterian Church of Mexico.
As part of that relationship,
both presbyteries exchange mission workers to benefit the work of the sister
presbytery. Homestead sends educators, and Olmeca sends missionary evangelists.
Because of the demographics
of the Schuyler community, where nearly 50% of the populations living within the
city limits are recently arrived from Central and South America, the needs here
are many for a Presbyterian ministry among our newest neighbors. Both
presbyteries have agreed that the Olmeca missionaries should work here and
strengthen the ties between our congregation and the numerous Presbyterians and
others who are here from such countries as Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Peru,
and Colombia, just to name a few.
The Olmeca missionary works to provide evangelistic outreach, worship
leadership, opportunities for Christian education, and bi-cultural endeavors,
all on behalf of our church. In addition to this, he is also working to provide
similar kinds of ministries in Columbus, and is assisting with the continuing
Hispanic ministry within the First Presbyterian Church of Norfolk. Upon his
return to Mexico this winter, it is anticipated that his work will be continued
under the leadership of another missionary worker whom he will first train to
build upon the foundations recently begun here.
